MOUNT VERNON — Two years ago, on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, Jean Davis was fatally shot outside her home on Dennis Church Road. The investigation into her death is ongoing, and Davis’ friends continue to remember her and to miss her. They also long for answers.
“We are very disappointed that no closure has come in this case,” said Pastor Bob Pelfrey of the Community Christian Fellowship, the church Davis attended. “Time has passed, but still the memory is very strong. Jean was such a vital part of our church, it’s pretty devastating. We’re very saddened over the fact that there’s really been no closure to it. You just would have hoped that by now something .... It seemed like there for a while, that there were leads and things were moving on, then things just got cold. It is what it is and there’s nothing we can do to change that, but it’s sad there is no closure and it’s like an open wound.”
Even after two years, Pelfrey said the events of that day are still crystal clear and easily surface on any given day.
“It’s still very difficult, and this past Sunday was very difficult at the church. There were several times when we were reliving that day we got the news. It was just so tragic. I still remember very clearly that our children’s bell choir had just finished, everything was going along beautifully and all of a sudden there comes the word that Jean has been murdered. ... Then our children’s bell choir was up there again Sunday doing Christmas songs. You can’t help but think how that had played out two years ago.
“Her memory lingers large. ... I had personally known Jean for the better part of 40 years. She was like my little sister. You’re never going to get over that.”
