MOUNT VERNON — Some community members and businessmen continue to express concerns about the process of, and true motivation for, the elimination of the engineering drafting program at the Knox County Career Center.
At its November meeting, the KCCC school board voted to discontinue the program, citing lack of student interest in the program. In 2010, Engineering Drafting graduated 11; in 2011, 10 students graduated from the program; and this year there are seven seniors.
Board president Richard McLarnan said there is a KCCC requirement that programs have 15 juniors and 12 seniors enrolled over a three-year period. It is unclear how those numbers were determined, as a review of enrollment figures for the past three school years shows there are some changes in enrollment in all programs from year to year. Sometimes the numbers cycle up and sometimes they cycle down.
