FREDERICKTOWN — Fire destroyed a farm shop Thursday evening on the Dennis Shinaberry farm 5 1/2 miles northwest of Fredericktown. The farm is on Lucerne Road near the Morrow County line.
Shinaberry said tools, machinery parts and an old tractor were the only contents of the shed. He added his son, Josh, had been welding in the 36-by-34-foot building in the afternoon and then went to their home less than a half mile to the south. Later they saw smoke coming from the structure.
The Fredericktown Community Fire Department answered the alarm at 4:34 p.m. They took two engines, their water tank truck, a rescue truck and two grass trucks. A Fredericktown EMS crew also went to the scene. Fire Chief Scott Mast called for mutual aid from the Johnsville department that sent an engine and tanker.
When they arrived, smoke was pouring out the front door of the structure. Mast said the only way to fight the fire was go in the front door with air masks. The smoke was so dense they had no visibility to spray water.
Firefighters were then able to open a large rear door that let out some of the smoke. Using two engines as pumpers, firefighters strung 1,200 feet of hose around the building to spray water from all sides.
