  • Work on the south end of the connector road from Coshocton to Yauger roads is progressing. Friday afternoon this bulldozer was leveling the gravel base for the paving. A contractor spokesman said they will pour the curbs and then the road will be ready for paving.

  • As part of the Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County’s New Harmonies, fiddle music came to the library Saturday afternoon. Playing to an audience that filled the library meeting room, the hour-long concert concluded with a favorite fiddle tune, with licks that sound like a steam locomotive, “Orange Blossom Special.”
  • Danville’s Quinton Ferenbaugh is upended by Bishop Rosecrans’ Luke Lloyd during the second quarter of their regional quarterfinal game on Saturday. The Bishops beat the Blue Devils, 34-7.

  • Fredericktown’s Emily Roberts crosses the finish line to place fourth in the Division III girls race at the state cross country championship in Hebron on Saturday.

  • Work on North Mulberry Street between Pleasant and Burgess streets was completed with paving on Monday. The project includes new curbing, sidewalks and grinding down the paving for repaving.
  • The playground at Riverside Park was a busy place during Monday’s warm 61 degree afternoon. Two-year-old Tavin Lindsey finally went down the slide with the encouragement of her mother, Azzure Lindsey.
  • First-Knox National Bank presented checks Thursday to the winners of the “Favorite Charity” contest on its Facebook page during October. From right, Barbara Barry, First-Knox assistant vice president of marketing, presents the first-place check for $500 to Mary Hendrickson, executive director of New Directions; Gail Lyall, executive director of Children’s Connections, receives the $300 check for second place from Nicholas Blanchard, manager of the First-Knox Blackjack Road office; and Krissta Hadsell, First-Knox Freedom Years director, presents the $200 check for third place to Nadine McClenathan, ultrasound services director at Care Net, and Lois Carter, executive director of Care Net. Facebook users were asked to vote for their favorite charity during the month of October. “The vote was extremely close,” Barry said.
  • Joe Nielson of Mount Vernon was promoted to first sergeant at the age of 19 in the Third Army's 99th Infantry during World War II.

  • The Beatles Chautauqua packed the Memorial Theater on Wednesday night to help raise food and funds for the Food for the Hungry campaign. From left, Mike Petee as Paul McCartney, Desmond Wall as George Harrison, Jim Stoner as John Lennon and Bill Miller as Ringo Starr. The fab four entertained the crowd with some of the group’s greatest hits and provided personal insight with dialogue between numbers. The group was joined by Eric Clapton, portrayed by Adam Taylor. Nearly $1,500 was raised as well as 1,000 food items. Food for the Hungry drive will take place Dec. 10 at Mount Vernon City Hall.
  • Danville and East Knox high school actors are in rehearsal for their fall play, “Little Woman.” From left are Hope Hillendbrand as Amy; Allyn Frye as Jo; Keeley Young, on the couch, as Beth and Paige Arthur as Meg. The play will be performed this weekend at Danville High School.
  • Pearl Frye of Bangs holds the poster given to her by one of the school children who greeted the veterans who went to Washington, Oct. 15, on an Honor Flight to visit the World War II memorial. Mrs. Frye served in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps at Merced Army Airfield in California.
  • The Mount Vernon Yellow Jacket volleyball team was honored at its annual banquet on Monday.   • Students at Columbia Elementary School recently made thank-you cards for 150 veterans in VA hospitals to honor them on Veterans Day. South Vernon United Methodist Church provided the materials for the cards for the annual project and delivered the finished projects to the veterans.   • St. Vincent de Paul students honored veterans on Thursday morning. In the photo, Sgt. Jason Conkle, who recently returned from active duty overseas, presents St. Vincent de Paul School with a flag that was flown in combat over Afghanistan on board a B-1b bomber during Operation Enduring Freedom. Sgt. David Tharp was also at the school and discussed his experiences while stationed in Iraq.  The students also had the opportunity to taste field rations.
  • The East Knox volleyball team handed out awards at its annual banquet Monday evening. Hayley Gray, center, led the team with the Defensive Player of the Year award and the Outstanding Player of the Year award. Danielle Totten, left, earned the Coach’s Award, and Lindsey Rager, right, was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Year.
  • Mount Vernon High School students used their day off classes to donate blood on Friday. John Francis Holbert, 16, volunteered as a blood donor at the high school. It was his first time as a donor. He is prepped for the procedure by blood collection specialist Janet Weinsheimer of Mount Vernon.
  • The Mount Vernon Police Department investigates the report of a suspicious check at the Ohio Heritage Bank late Friday afternoon. According to Detective Sgt. Jeff Jacobs, the MVPD is working to determine if the check was legitimate, forged or stolen. No additional information was available at press time.
  • According to a truck driver who delivered brine to this injection well on Friday, this holding tank is set up to collect any overflow from the seven holding tanks at the Rutledge Road site.
  • Knox County students did their part on election day by working at various polling places. Pictured at the Fredericktown precincts are, from left, Vanessa Gertel, Knox County Career Center, and Mount Vernon High School students Matt Omahan and Taylor Gleason.
  • The Fredericktown High School Marching Band on the field at the University of Dayton during  its performance at state finals, Nov. 6. The band earned a superior rating.
  • Because of the work done by Centerburg school district treasurer Ellen Scott, seated, and assistant treasurer Lori Houck the district has received the Auditor of State Award.
  • Thirty-two Knox County high school senior girls are practicing each night this week preparing for the two-night Knox County Distinguished Young Women scholarship program Friday and Saturday nights. A test of physical fitness is one of the events leading to the selection of the Distinguished Young Women. From left are Candice James, Haley Bisesi-Adkins and Hanah Boggs, all of Mount Vernon High School and Eleni Teegarden, Centerburg. The programs start at 8 p.m. each evening. Tickets are available at the Memorial Theater box office from 6 to 7 p.m. evenings.
  • This American Bald Eagle was spotted in a tree on the south side of Mount Vernon. The Bald Eagle population continues to grow in Ohio and siting have been reported in several areas in Knox County.
  • Danville junior Nate Zeune has been named the All-Area Golfer of the Year by the Mount Vernon News.
  • Ted Stanley has resigned as head coach of the Kenyon College Lords.
  • Business After Hours on Tuesday evening was at the new Knox Community Hospital Urgent Care Center, on Coshocton Avenue, for visitors to tour the new facility. X-ray technician Rob Sells demonstrated this new digital X-ray machine to, from left, Linda Lawson, CEO of Eastern Star Home, Phil Herald, Herald’s Appliances & Electronics, and Nancy Karan, director of the facility.
  • After students at the Alternative Center studied wars from textbooks and movies, they had the opportunity Tuesday to hear firsthand war memories from World War II veteran Jim Krebs, 86 of Columbus. Krebs and his twin brother, Jack, fought together in the famous Battle of the Bulge in the bitter winter of 1944-45 and Jack died from a sniper bullet in his brother’s arms. They were 19 years old. Krebs was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry, the Bronze Star and was wounded twice receiving two Purple Hearts.

  • John “Red” Shaw will be the grand marshal for the 2011 Mount Vernon Christmas Parade. The parade will kick off Sunday, Nov. 27, at 2:30 p.m. in downtown Mount Vernon.
  • Members of Co. B of the 5th Kentucky Infantry, led by Capt. Jeff Steiner, fire off a musket salute to Gen. Daniel Harris Reynolds during a dedication ceremony Nov. 12 in Centerburg. An Ohio Historical Society marker honoring the Centerburg native was dedicated at the village park.
  • Several bridges on the Kokosing Gap Trail will be getting new decks. Now 20 years old, the planks are weathered and rough for on-line skaters. Funds for the projects are from The Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County. Mohican Valley Builders is the contractor.
  • Mike McKenna, consultant with American Energy Alliance, speaks at Thursday’s rally in downtown Mount Vernon to help bring awareness to local residents about energy opportunities around Ohio and sending a message to political leaders on governmental energy policies.

  • Sewer projects in Millwood and Bladensburg are well under way. This crew in Bladensburg were digging in eight-inch main line pipe along the north side of Ohio 541, Thursday. The machine in the foreground is pushing gravel around a manhole cover.
  • This wrestling scene was an audience favorite Thursday when Kenyon College acting students brought Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” to Dan Emmett Elementary School.
  • Richard Burch, left, reaches over to place Christmas lights on the city’s Christmas tree on Public Square on Friday. Burch was assisted by Mount Vernon Fire Department firefighters Todd Davis and Josh Lester. The tree will be illuminated on Sunday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m. at the conclusion of the annual Christmas Walk and Parade.

  • Longtime area resident and businessman John “Red” Shaw served as the grand marshal for the 2011 Mount Vernon Christmas Parade. Joining Shaw in the horse-drawn carriage is his wife, Betty.
