The crossing guard is a top position for students at Mount Vernon elementary schools where young people must cross the streets on their way home. It is an all-weather job. It was 20 degrees outside with a brisk west wind blowing Tuesday when school was dismissed at Pleasant Street School. Fifth-grader Josie Heffernan dressed in a warm jacket, wool cap and mittens to see her classmates across the street. Fifth-graders are selected and trained in the spring for the job.
