CENTERBURG — Investigation with the State Fire Marshal is continuing on the apartment fire which occurred late Tuesday evening in Centerburg that sent one tenant to the hospital.

SFM public information officer Shane Cartmill reported Wednesday afternoon that the fire originated near an entertainment center in the living room of the occupied upstairs apartments, but the cause is still undetermined.

While the apartment of origin suffered significant fire damage, the adjoining apartment and first-floor businesses suffered smoke and water damage. Cartmill said that smoke alarms were not in place in the apartment.

The tenant, Bill Myers, was transported to Ohio State University Medical Center. No update has been received on his condition, nor has contact been made with Josh Scarbury who was reported to have pulled Myers from the building.

Joe Porter, Central Ohio Joint Fire District chief, said he believes the fire was not deliberately set. “Everything is burned to the point it will probably end up being undetermined,” said Porter. “We can’t really prove how it started.”
