HOWARD — A Mount Vernon News reader reported Wednesday she received a phone call she believed was a scam and wanted other readers to be aware and not fall prey to those with illegal intentions.
“I got a call from a woman saying I was going to get a new Medicare card and that it would also cover dental and vision,” she said.
Not believing the caller’s claim, she hung up the phone. The Howard resident said the caller spoke with a foreign accent.
“She called back and said, ‘Why you hang up on me,’” the Howard resident said. At that point, she was asked what bank she uses.
“I didn’t even think about, I just told her what bank,” she said. However, when prompted to give her bank account number, she knew she was being targetted.
“I told her I’d have to get it, and she said she would wait,” the reader said. “I just put the phone down and let it sit there. I could hear her say, ‘Hello. Hello.’ Then I hung it up.”
After calling a Medicare agent, she was told that Medicare would never ask for personal banking information.
“I felt violated,” the reader said, “but I wouldn’t want any to fall for this and give their personal information.”
