MOUNT VERNON — The door is now closed for business at the Mount Vernon location of 84 Lumber, 665 Harcourt Road. The local lumber and building materials supplier closed effective Monday morning, as announced by Jeff Nobers, vice president, marketing and public relations.

Economic reasons were cited for the closing of the local business.

“We’ve lost a lot of housing market moving this way in the last four to five years. The trend has reversed,” said Nobers. “It was always a tight market. And while the market has declined, prices have declined.”

Being just one of only six 84 Lumber locations in Ohio, the Mount Vernon store is the only one in the state planned for closure. It opened for business in Mount Vernon in June 1991. Nobers said the company has closed nearly 200 locations in the past six years. “We never want to close a store, but sometimes it’s what you have to do,” he said.

Six employees had been on staff locally. Nobers said that some, but not all the employees will be offered a position at another location. “We will try to keep them reasonably close in the area,” he said.

The property and buildings are planned to be put up for sale.
