MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City Council discusses legislation that would require city departments that report to the safety-service director to keep an inventory of any item valued at more than $100 and all hand tools and equipment.

The legislation, written by Assistant Law Director Rob Broeren, with the urging from former council member Jay Maners.

“In drafting this legislation, we looked at legislation that other municipalities in the state of Ohio have adopted over the last two years,” Broeren told council during a committee meeting Monday. “We reviewed a half dozen or a dozen pieces of legislation and I picked out what I felt were the best parts of those and created our own piece.”

Council member at-large Mike Hillier questioned the need to provide copies of the departmental inventories to council and administration as the legislation is written. Broeren said the effort was included in order promote transparency. Hillier also asked how those copies would be distributed because he was concerned about the amount of paper it would require. Broeren explained the information could be provided by a digital means or online to control costs.
