MOUNT GILEAD — A veteran Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper is the new Commander at the Mount Gilead Post. In his 22 years on the patrol, Lt. Toby Smith has served at several posts and recently taught at the Patrol Academy in Columbus.

He is a 1985 graduate of Sandy Valley High School near Magnolia. He studied business management at DeVry before joining the patrol. He taught business at the academy from 1997 until 2000 when he was promoted to sergeant and assigned to the Granville Post briefly.

He returned to the academy to teach officer safety programs from 2000-03. His next assignment was at the patrol headquarters in Columbus where he worked in employee mediation and individual trooper training for troopers who have career and family problems.

He was recently at Mansfield where he was promoted to Lieutenant in June.

As a hobby he practices martial arts with competition among local police officers and other enthusiasts. He lives in the Fredericktown area with his wife and three sons.
