MOUNT VERNON — Sixteen indictments were handed down by the Knox County Grand Jury on Monday. Arraignments are scheduled for Jan. 20 before Common Pleas Court Judge Otho Eyster.
Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher said Andrew J. Riffle, 22, Utica, is accused of assaulting a 28-year-old Mount Vernon man on Jan. 1. Thatcher said at about 2:30 a.m., Mount Vernon Police Department Patrolman Jason Payne, found the unresponsive victim lying on the sidewalk at a West High Street address. Payne stayed with the victim until he was transported by squad to Knox Community Hospital for treatment of an apparent head injury. The victim was flown to a Columbus hospital for additional medical treatment.
Mary Ann Fowler, 28, Mount Vernon, faces charges of aggravated vehicular assault, operating a vehicle while under the influence and assaulting a peace officer. Thatcher said on Dec. 25, 2011, Trooper Paul J. Shore, Ohio State Highway Patrol, was dispatched to a one-vehicle injury crash at Ohio 229 and Tucker Road where he found Fowler and her seriously-injured male passenger. Fowler allegedly failed field sobriety tests administered by Shore, and then she allegedly kicked Shore when he arrested her for OVI. The crash victim suffered a broken arm, according to Thatcher.
On Dec. 19, 2011, at about 7 p.m., Bryant B.R. Satta, 24, Mount Vernon, and two other men allegedly broke into a Fredericktown residence where Satta held the male and female residents at gunpoint. Satta faces aggravated burglary, kidnapping and attempted felonious assault charges. Satta’s alleged accomplices, Timothy E. Walters, 28, and Josh M. Waddell, 22, both of Mount Vernon, face kidnapping charges. The case was investigated by Fredericktown Police Patrolman Matt White and Auxiliary Sergeant Roger Brown.
On Dec. 21, 2011, at about 11:30 a.m., Sergeant Al Dexter and Deputy Wayne Noggle, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, caught Ryan F. Smith, 27, Mount Vernon, after he allegedly burglarized a home on Blue Road. Smith faces burglary and breaking and entering charges for a string of alleged home break-ins on Blue Road in November and December. Smith’s alleged accomplice Andrew W. Pitkiewicz, 26, Mount Vernon, is also charged with burglary. Thatcher said Smith also faces two charges of possessing stolen credit cards. Detective Dave Light, KCSO, and Patrolman Brian Durbin, MVPD, investigated the stolen credit card cases.
Scott L. Reynolds, 34, Mount Vernon, allegedly sold heroin on Dec. 20, 21 and 22, 2011. According to the indictment, Reynolds sold heroin in the presence of a juvenile.
Wendy J. Brown, 32, Mount Vernon, is accused of permitting drug abuse and three counts of endangering children for allegedly allowing her residence to be used for illegal drug activity on Dec. 21, 2011. Thatcher said three children were allegedly present at the time of the commission of the drug offense. Detective Cpl. Matt Dailey, MVPD, investigated the Reynolds and Brown cases.
Rodney J. Snyder, 37, Mount Vernon, allegedly engaged in the manufacture of methamphetamine on Sept. 21, 2011. Snyder is accused of illegal manufacture of drugs and illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs. Snyder also faces endangering children charges for allegedly “cooking meth” on premises where two children, ages 5 and 9, were also present. Detective Craig Feeney, MVPD, investigated the case.
On Nov. 4, 2011, December D. Rutan, 35, and David R. Atkinson, 35, allegedly possessed cocaine, heroin and drug abuse instruments including a syringe in their Centerburg apartment. Rutan and Atkinson are charged with aggravated possession of drugs and possession of drug abuse instruments. Lt. Gary Rohler and Detective Doug Turpen, KCSO, investigated the cases.
According to their indictments, four men face felony domestic violence charges due to prior convictions for misdemeanor domestic violence offenses.
Jaron M. Dean, 24, Mount Vernon, allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on Dec. 21, 2011. Dean was convicted of domestic violence in the Mount Vernon and Circleville municipal courts in 2005 and 2010. Patrolman Travis Tharp, MVPD, investigated the case.
Andrew M. Richmer, 37, Danville, allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on Dec. 30, 2011. Richmer was convicted of domestic violence in the Mount Vernon Municipal Court in January and November 2011. Deputy Jason Stachler, KCSO, investigated the case.
Kyle M. Crawford, 22, New Albany, allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on Dec. 30, 2011. Crawford was convicted of domestic violence in the Mount Vernon Municipal Court in 2009.
John A. Meto Jr., 35, allegedly assaulted his wife on Jan. 6. Meto was convicted of domestic violence in the Mount Vernon Municipal Court in 2006. Deputy Ryan Burgess, KCSO, investigated the Crawford and Meto cases.
