MOUNT VERNON — When Knox County Sheriff hopefuls Roger Brown and David Shaffer took the stage Thursday night at the Knox County 912 Project Meet the Candidates, they began by summarizing their backgrounds and experience.
Brown is a Mount Vernon native who attended Mount Vernon High School and the Knox County Career Center. He began his career in law enforcement as a special deputy in the Knox County Sheriff’s office, where he volunteered in the jail division until he was hired full-time in 1993.
He received his Ohio Corrections Certification in 1993 and Ohio Peace Officers Training certification a year later. After two and-a-half years working in the jail, Brown moved to the patrol division for 11 years.
From 1999 to 2003, he owned a small business in Mount Vernon.
In 2003, he received Basic SWAT Training and in 2005 he was certified as a computerized voice stress analysis examiner. He joined the sheriff’s detective division in 2007, and in 2009 was promoted to the rank of detective sergeant.
