MOUNT VERNON — “Lest we forget: The reason, the cause, the dream,” was the theme of the ninth annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration breakfast Monday morning at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
Presented by The Knox County Dr. King Legacy Committee, the celebration was “To honor the accomplishments of the greatest leader for civil rights,” according to committee chairperson Terri Hubbard.
Following an opening prayer by pastor Dewayne E. Hubbard Jr., and a breakfast buffet prepared by Pioneer College Caterers, numerous guests were welcomed to the podium to take part in the program.
Mona Carter led the crowd in singing “Lift Every Voice,” a song which has become synonymous with the civil rights movement.
MVNU President Dr. Dan Martin spoke of the importance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“This should be a day to celebrate the ideals of his message,” said Martin. He shared stories of others who have grasped King’s message, “in opening the doors of justice, doors of peace and doors of righteousness.”
