MOUNT VERNON — An update on the ongoing wastewater upgrade projects in Knox County was given Thursday morning when county water/wastewater superintendent Ray Withers met with the Knox County Board of Commissioners. Withers shared photos of recent projects in Howard and Bladensburg and explained the progress being made on the projects.

Well No. 4 at Howard is now deemed functional once again after being taken down for cleaning. The well was reportedly encrusted with iron and producing a red-colored water. Jamison Well Drilling and Pump Service of Mansfield was contacted to perform a refurbishing and cleaning. Videos were taken before and after the job, and now show the well sufficiently cleaned. Withers expects the well to be back up and running next week. “This all went very well,” said Withers.

Disappointment was stressed in results from the SolarBee mixer installed last year in a wastewater lagoon. With the function of these mixers being to keep solids in suspension in the lagoon, the mixer “really wasn’t doing anything more than what we were already doing,” said Withers. The SolarBee mixer will be sent back soon.

Withers is also working on a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency about a sampling survey they conducted. The EPA had forwarded some recommendations and requirements in response to the samples taken. Withers is now responding to their recommendations and in meeting their deadlines.
