FREDERICKTOWN — For the second year in a row, through a blind taste test by nationally renowned producers and marketers, Ann’s Raspberry Farm & Specialty Crops has won a national Good Food award for its Savory Brussel Sprout Relish. The only producer in 2012 to win two Good Food medals, Ann’s also brought home an award for Red Raspberry Gourmet Jam. Its Jalapeno Raspberry Gourmet Jam was a finalist in the 2012 competition, which was held in San Francisco.
In 2011, Ann’s won the Central Ohio Signature Food Award and two national Good Food awards.
The Good Food award is giving to people who grow and produce things sustainably. The goal is to promote tasty, authentic foods in the United States.
A family affair, the raspberry and brussel sprout farm is worked by the Trudel family. Ann Trudel is the artisan food preserver, Daniel is the grower and bookkeeper and their daughter, Ali, is a general assistant. Son, Eric Trudel is the technical advisor.
“It’s really exciting to get a second national award,” said Ann. “This year there were a lot of companies, one in particular that won last year is very well known in California and they didn’t win at all this year. And they sent a lot of stuff in. When we heard that, we were even more astonished. This is really amazing that a little farm in Fredericktown, Ohio, would be chosen in a blind taste test over 180 different products. It’s pretty amazing. It really is. To win for something that’s unusual, is one thing, but to win for a basic red raspberry jam — That is what we felt so honored about.”
Ann said winning awards was never a goal of the operation. Producing quality products was and is the main objective.
“We chop our vegetables and everything by hand,” said Ann. “We put real vinegar and real honey we get locally into the stuff. Our stuff is real. And that’s what really feels so good about it.”
“We’ve been so helped by the people that have been involved in agriculture and food processing, a great network of people,” said Ann.
Located on five acres on Blair Road, Fredericktown, Ann’s Raspberry Farm & Specialty Crops is a certified naturally grown farm which specializes in growing chemical-free red raspberries and brussel sprouts. It also produces the different peppers and onions used to make the award winning jams and relishes, which, along with fresh produce, are sold in farmers markets in the Central Ohio area.
