MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis gave a State of the City address to members of the Kiwanis Club, Monday at The Alcove.
Mavis touched on budget cuts at both the local and state level, current and future projects, and answered questions from Kiwanians during the luncheon.
“There are good things happening in Mount Vernon,” Mavis said before beginning a slide show of projects around the city. “We are in good condition financially, but not without having to make some difficult decisions.”
Mavis explained how the state’s budget cuts will be affecting the city and villages in the near future, and how the Commercial Activities Tax, which he was hoping would make up the difference, was shrinking quickly and may be gone in the next year or two.
The mayor then went on to talk about the projects around the city, including an upcoming one on Coshocton Avenue. The road will be widened to three lanes from the Center Run bridge to Shalimar Drive, and a safety project from Sychar Road to TSC will also be part of the project.
