MOUNT VERNON — Discussion continued Tuesday with the Mount Vernon Dilapidated Buildings Commission regarding Codified Ordinance No. 1305 — Dangerous Structures, as requested by chairman Dave Glass, Mount Vernon Safety/Service Director. Discussion centered around how to evolve the language into a better ordinance which more properly fits the needs of the commission in 2012. “This ordinance is at least 20 years old if not 40,” said Glass, stressing that it needs updated.

“I think our definitions should be expanded,” said Mount Vernon Fire Chief Chris Menapace, calling for a definition section, civil liability for condemnation spelled out as well as a timeline schedule. “These need to be somehow added to our code. But how aggressive do we want to be?”

Information was shared on a similar ordinance used by the City of Newark. “I think it’s due for a general update,” said Larry Fogle, City Code Enforcement Officer.

It was decided for Joe Paul of the City of Newark to be invited to come to an upcoming meeting and to share information on his ordinance and to see what he thinks of the current ordinance in Mount Vernon.
