BLADENSBURG — The East Knox school family heard some good news and bad news at a community forum held Tuesday at the elementary school in Bladensburg. The good news is, the school board is not planning to close down the elementary building as a cost-savings measure. The bad news is, the district is out of cost-savings options and desperately needs to increase its revenue to avoid a fiscal emergency situation.

“The board in the past has not been very good about communicating,” said new board member Warren Edstrom. “This has caused mistrust and suspicion and tonight is the beginning of correcting that problem.

“The responsibility of the school board is to get the best possible education for the children at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayers,” Edstrom said. “In this economic climate we’re dealing with today, this is an extremely difficult situation. The board and the administration are struggling with this thing. There’s not a whole lot of options. I can tell you, though, after seeing this presentation, we decided closing the elementary school down is probably not an option. We don’t really see a reason to close it.”
