MOUNT VERNON — Twenty-five intelligent and accomplished senior girls from around Ohio came to Mount Vernon on Saturday for the start of the Distinguished Young Women scholarship program.

They arrived, with their parents, at the Memorial Building where the girls had a brief orientation.

Then they were introduced from the balcony of the ballroom and as they came down, were presented with a key to the city by Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis, who also presented a brief history of the city.

DYW President Cheri Butcher announced preliminary awards.

The Steven Zelkowitz communication award went to Rileigh Zickafoose Central Allen County’s Distinguished Young Woman.
