MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon Middle School seventh-grader, Alana Reams, died Sunday at Nationwide Children’s Hospital following a four-wheeler accident.
The accident occurred on Newark Road early Sunday afternoon. Reams was taken by MedFlight to the Columbus hospital.
No further information regarding the accident was available at press time.
School Superintendent Steve Short said he was sorry to hear of the young girl’s death.
“It’s a very sad day,” he said. “She’ll be missed by the school, by the community and by her classmates. We’re going to do our best to help our staff and students move forward. But it is a very difficult time, a very difficult situation. My thoughts go out to the family.”
Short said the school district will have counselors available at the middle school Tuesday to work with both students and staff as needed. Since Alana has a brother in high school and a sister in elementary school, counselors and others in those buildings will also be on hand to help individuals deal with their grief.
Alana’s Facebook friends are encouraging everyone to wear blue on Tuesday in her memory.
