A Mount Vernon Middle School seventh-grader, Alana Reams, died Sunday at Nationwide Children’s Hospital following a four-wheeler accident.

According to the police the report, Katelynn Goetzman, 12, of 233 Newark Road, was driving the vehicle east on the Goetzman property at an “unsafe speed” about 2:13 p.m., when she lost control and struck a chainlink fence between the properties at 231 and 233 Newark Road.

The four-wheeler went through the fence 27 feet west of the 231 Newark Road building and wound up near the building. The vehicle overturned onto Reams. Goetzman was thrown clear and received only minor injuries.

Neither girl was wearing a helmet, according to the report.

Police Capt. George Hartz said they could not determine how fast the vehicle was moving and did not know of any mechanical issues that contributed to the crash.

He said the investigation is complete and no citations have been filed.

Reams was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital by MedFlight.
