MOUNT VERNON — The employment situation in Knox County is looking up, if the Career Expo held Tuesday at the Dan Emmett Conference Center, is any indication. More than 50 employers and educational institutions were on hand to showcase the current opportunities and possibilities available to area residents. Representatives from manufacturing, financial institutions and health care agencies were in attendance, as were auto dealerships, insurance companies, communications companies and more. More than half the businesses at the expo were taking resumes and application.
The Area Development Foundation and the Knox County Chamber of Commerce sponsored the career expo because “there is a need right now,” said ADF president Steve Wears.
“We have lots of open jobs in the area,” he said, “and we have a lot of people looking for jobs. In every sector across the board somebody’s hiring: There are manufacturing jobs; there are advertising jobs; there are marketing jobs. We’re trying to help make a connection here, so people who are looking for jobs can see what is available, and people who are looking for people to hire can get them through here at one shot. The job seekers can make multiple contacts instead of having to go to each individual employer’s place of business.”
