MOUNT VERNON — A new state-of-the-art athletic arena is coming to Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Officials broke ground Friday on the new 68,000-square-foot, $10 million facility, which will be attached to the present Prince Student Union.

“This is a tremendous day in the life of our university,” said Dr. Daniel J. Martin, President of Mount Vernon Nazarene University. “We celebrate this new day for the student body, student athletes, the campus, Mount Vernon and surrounding Knox County. It’s certainly a day we’ve dreamed about for a number of years.

“Winston Churchill said that we shape our buildings, and thereafter, they shape us. There’s no doubt this building will shape who we are.”

The facility, which is expected to open in the fall of 2013, will be the home of the MVNU basketball and volleyball teams and feature three full-size athletic courts and seat 2,100 for games. For concerts, performances and other special events, it will hold 3,000 individuals.

There will be a state-of-the-art athletic training center, cardio fitness and weight rooms, as well as classrooms, locker rooms and offices.
