MOUNT VERNON — The race for Knox County Commissioner will be threefold come November as Pleasant Township Trustee Jim Hughes has thrown his hat in the ring as an independent candidate.

Hughes filed his petition with the Knox County Board of Elections several weeks ago, according to BOE director Kim Horn. The deadline to file as an independent candidate was Monday.

Hughes will square off against Democratic candidate John Booth and the winner of the Republican battle for candidacy between Thom Collier, Shirley Fletcher and Tim Smith.
