MOUNT VERNON — During a special board meeting this morning, the Knox County Board of Health accepted the resignation of board member Dr. Tracy Schermer and then voted to hire Schermer to work in the health department medical clinic.
Schermer will begin working in the medical clinic on an as-needed basis immediately. Health Commissioner Julie Miller said the board hopes to make his position full-time by May.
Schermer, of Gambier, has been a medical doctor in Knox County for more than 20 years. He has worked for Kenyon College, the office of Dr. William Elder in Fredericktown and currently works at the Center for Wound Healing at Knox Community Hospital, a position he will continue.
In other action, the board terminated the contract with Dr. Laura Foliano, effective immediately. Foliano of Westerville had worked in the medical clinic since January 2008.
Schermer was appointed to the board of health by the District Advisory Council in November 2011. The DAC which will hold its annual meeting on March 27, will now search for another physician to fill the vacancy left by Schermer’s resignation. In accordance with Ohio law, the board of health must include a physician among its members.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the board of health is March 28 at 7 p.m. in the health department conference room.
