MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon City Schools Board of Education on Monday recognized Karen Buchwald Wright, Jan Reynolds and the Ariel Foundation for their support of specialized reading and language intervention programs to benefit the students in the district.
Wright has funded the Fast ForWord program at Twin Oak Elementary since 2009; 45 pupils are participating in the program this year. The Ariel Foundation in August provided “Failure is Not an Option” grants for Wilson Reading training and materials and Level Literacy Intervention training and kits. At least 540 elementary students district-wide are benefiting from those grants, said Jan Miller, Twin Oak Elementary School principal.
To demonstrate how the students are taking advantage of the opportunities, a video presentation described the Wilson and LLI programs, and speech pathologist Terri Farnham explained the Fast Forward programs.
