MOUNT VERNON — Planning ahead and preparing for weather emergencies can help people deal more effectively and calmly with circumstances beyond their control. Planning for one’s pets should also be included in the mix.

Geoff Gregg, DVM, Hillside Veterinary Clinic, said one of the most important things dog and cat owners can do in advance is to microchip the animals. “Trying to get dogs and cats reunited with their owners was a big problem after [Hurricane] Katrina,” he said. “When they are found, how do I identify them?”
