One passenger was transported to Knox Community Hospital following this car-truck accident at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, at the intersection of North Main and Chestnut streets. Gary Rowe, driver of a Santmyer Oil Co. truck, was traveling westbound on Chestnut when the driver of a Toyota Camry, Anita Sherwin of Big Prairie, ran a red light and struck the front end of his truck. The Mount Vernon Police Department and Mount Vernon EMS personnel responded to the scene of the accident. Sherwin was cited for a red light violation. Both drivers were uninjured. Sherwin's passenger, name unknown at press time, was taken to KCH. Acting EMA director Richard Dzik said there was no concern with the oil truck as no leakage was reported. (Photo by Alan Reed)

Extensive preparation for the new sidewalk project along Mount Vernon Avenue is moving along. The path for most of the sidewalk has been prepared, with the pouring of concrete scheduled to begin later this week, according to Mount Vernon Safety-Service Director Dave Glass. The sidewalk will extend on the north side of Mount Vernon Avenue east to Gambier Street. Small's Asphalt Paving is performing the work, which is expected to be completed in phases by early June. A culvert at the intersection of South Division Street was extended Tuesday to allow for realignment of a parking lot driveway. A traffic signal will also be installed at this intersection after completion of the new sidewalk. The project is fully funded by the Ariel Foundation. (Photo by Alan Reed)
Extensive damage was sustained in this house fire at 301 N. Norton St. on Tuesday afternoon. Mount Vernon firefighters responded to the fire at the uninhabited house and had the fire put out in less than an hour. Cause of the blaze remains under investigation. (Photo by Alan Reed)
