MOUNT VERNON — Conard “Dude” Conway, a veteran of World War II, will serve as the honorary marshal of this year’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony on May 28, Mayor Richard Mavis said Friday.
Mavis said the Patriotic Memorial Committee has been meeting and is encouraging World War II veterans to ride in the parade on the special wagon which will be provided. Veterans will meet at the VFW on Chestnut Street at 9:45 a.m. and will be taken to the parade. After the ceremony at Public Square, they will be taken back to the VFW.
Mavis said Conway has also agreed to head the effort to get World War II vets involved. Veterans are encouraged to call Conway at 393-2306 or the mayor’s office at 393-9517 to sign up to ride on the wagon.
The annual “Take Back the Night” march and rally will take place at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday on the Public Square. The event is sponsored by New Directions Domestic Abuse Shelter and the Delta Project as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
City projects
Mavis said the small grader, known as a “maintainer” and used for grading alleys, will be back on the job next week. Mavis said the city was finally able to get the parts needed for repairs. The disagreement over whether the grader was still under warranty was settled by the company agreeing to pay for the parts, while the city will install them.
The sidewalk project on Mount Vernon Avenue was to be about 40 percent completed by the end of the day Friday. The traffic signal bases at Division Street have been poured and the poles may go up next week.
