“It’s really all over the place,” Mount Vernon Police Capt. George Hartz told the News this morning. An area east of downtown has been of the highest concentration as of late, according to Hartz. Certain areas which have recently been in focus are Park Street south of Coshocton Avenue; Gambier Street west of Edgewood Road and south to Howard Street. More specific areas targeted have been the 600 block of East Chestnut Street, the 500 block of East Vine Street and the 500 block of East Gambier Street.

Other areas receiving reports have been North Mulberry Street; and North Main Street particularly in the Curtis Street area.

“It’s not like there are hundreds of burglaries going on; it’s more like a handful,” said Hartz. “These are the main areas of concern. Everything else is just a shotgun blast. Nothing else is really localized.”

Chief Mike Merrilees encourages city residents to get to know their neighbors and be watchful of what goes on in their neighborhoods.

He encourages residents to use the following numbers to report information or report suspicious activity:

•9-1-1 — To report such things as a crime in progress.

•740-397-2222 — To report questionable activity during, or after, the event.

•740-393-9536 — To give information on current investigations.
