FREDERICKTOWN — Village council Monday approved an emergency ordinance authorizing the village administrator to apply to the Ohio Department of Transportation for a federal Transportation Enhancement Grant for paving the Fredericktown Bicycle Trail.
The village will pay 20 percent of the total cost of the project, which is estimated at $500,000, so the village’s share would be $100,000. The Knox County Park District has pledged $35,000 to help the village pay its share of the project, Mayor Alan Kintner said.
Kintner said that, if approved, the grant will probably not be available until 2014, so the village has plenty of time to budget the other $65,000.
The measure was passed as an emergency because the grant application has to be in by May 1, Village Administrator Gary Gallogly said.
Also concerning the bike path, Kintner shared with council a letter he sent to all property owners along the bike path. The letter explains that volunteers will be cleaning up the bike path corridor this spring and the property owners need to remove any items that have been stored on or permanently or intermittently parked on the bike path. Brush piles that have been placed on the CSX right of way will be removed by the volunteers.
In the case of items constructed on the right of way, Kintner said he or someone else from the village will be in contact with the owners about whether they need to be removed.
