MOUNT VERNON — The accomplishments of winter scholar athletes and winter sports athletes were applauded Monday during the Mount Vernon School board meeting. The board issued formal congratulations to boys and girls swimmers, girls and boys basketball players and wrestlers.
The high school was the focus during the reports and public participation portion of the meeting. John Noonan received the high school “Behind the Scenes” award. High school principal Kathy Kasler on Tuesday told the News Noonan, as volunteer treasurer of the Music Boosters, has done an amazing job combining three “housekeeping accounting” systems into one.
There was also a presentation about the MVHS digital art curriculum, which, instructor Deanna Badger said, is “preparing students for the 21st Century.”
Regarding personnel, the board granted the retirement request of high school science teacher Paul Arnold, effective June 30. Arnold has served MVCSD for 29 years. The board also approved a medical leave of absence for cook Donna Smith, retroactively effective March 20 through the end of the 2011-12 school year. Tom Groseclose was employed as a second shift custodian at the high school and several individuals were hired for the temporary summer work crew. Middle school track coach Gary Keller was advanced on the salary schedule due to verification of experience; and the board approved a list of volunteers to administer medication and added to the classified substitute list.
