MOUNT VERNON — A quartet of local science students will be participating in State Science Day on May 5. They will be competing for more than $2.2 million in scholarships and awards.
More than 1,000 judges will evaluate student-originated, inquiry- and technologically based projects and the communication skills of the students who advanced to the state-level competition from 15 district science days.
Mount Vernon High School junior Willa Kerkhoff will exhibit her science research project titled “A face in the crowd: Attractiveness, memory and gender stereotypes.”
Andrew Powell, a freshman at MVHS, will present his research about the “evolution of a common fitness phenotype in high and low density environments.”
From Utica High School, Hannah Brubaker, grade 10, looked into Chubby chicks: A study of extra protein in a chick’s diet.
Jacob Hart, a freshman at Utica High School, will be displaying his research project called “Plants want what? Alpaca manure vs. chicken manure as fertilizer.”
Public viewing of student exhibits on May 5 starts at 12:30 p.m. and ends at 1:45 p.m. in the French Field House, 460 Woody Hayes Drive. An interactive Fun with Physics Science Demonstration and the awards ceremony begin at 2 p.m. in St. John Arena. Admission is free.
