MOUNT VERNON — Thanks to this year’s Leadership Knox class, softball players at Memorial Park now have a safe place to warm up and practice hitting.
The 18 members of the class erected a batting cage April 21, a week later than they planned. Spokesman Steve McCurdy said the rain and cold the week before caused the delay. Although the weather still wasn’t great, the cage was erected and is in use.
McCurdy said that when the class began, each member suggested a class project to benefit the community. It could cost up to $2,000, and the class then raised the money. The list of projects was first narrowed to six, then they voted on the final choice.
McCurdy said he suggested the cage project.
