The Fredericktown Community Fire District was called to the James Stine residence at 18640 Fredericktown-Amity Road at 2:28 p.m. Thursday. Chief Scott Mast said a fire had originated in the area of a woodburner, extending up an outside wall and up into the attic. No injuries were reported, and the house sustained moderate damage, according to Mast. The fire was contained in about one hour. Also responding to the scene was the College/Monroe Township Fire Dept. The cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation. (Photo by Alan Reed)

Buzzing sounds alerted Nancy Davis on Wednesday afternoon to a large swarm of honeybees in a tree in her yard on North Main Street. Local beekeepers Shirley Fletcher and Lou Petros arrived Thursday morning to safely capture the bees and take them away to an area farmer to care for them. The swarm had been much larger on Wednesday, said Davis. Fletcher explained that it is normal for honeybees to swarm like this. The mild winter of 2012 can bring out more swarms and earlier, according to Fletcher. This is the third time in 40 years that Davis has encountered a swarm of bees in her yard. (Photo by Alan Reed)
