MOUNT VERNON — Denominational differences were put aside for an evening in a showing of unity for one common cause. Local members of the Church of God, Church of Christ, Assembly of God, Church of the Nazarene and other denominations stood side by side Thursday evening at Public Square, all coming together for the purpose of prayer.
WNZR station manager Marcy Rinehart welcomed the crowd of over 200 people to the 61st annual National Day of Prayer ceremony in Mount Vernon with the theme of “One Nation Under God,” based on Psalm 33:12. Made possible by the Knox Network of Christian Ministries, the event provided an opportunity for prayer and praise, lifting up to God an array of specific prayers. Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis read a proclamation designating May 3, 2012, as a day of prayer throughout Mount Vernon. “Prayer has long been a positive force that unites our citizens and serves as a source of inspiration and hope to countless individuals,” said Mavis.
Inspirational musical selections were provided by the band New Covenant from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The crowd was found singing along to the tunes “I Stand Amazed,” “Our God,” “Revelation Song” and others.
