MOUNT VERNON — As work on Coshocton Avenue gets under way, drivers are finding alternate routes around the construction zone, creating more traffic on other streets, including Vernonview, Teryl, East High and other streets.
“With all these streets getting more traffic, city police have been alerted that we want speed enforcement and they will be issuing tickets,” Mayor Richard Mavis said.
The city will also move the speed trailer, currently parked on East High Street, to other streets with increased traffic to alert people to their speed.
“We want to try to curtail problems early,” the mayor said. “You can take these routes, but you can’t abuse the speed limits.”
City Engineer Cameron Keaton reports the city’s water line replacement project on part of Coshocton Avenue is proceeding quickly. The only snag encountered has been that the old water line, which was thought to have been located toward the middle of the road, is toward the side and has been encountered in digging the trench for the new line. A couple service lines have been snagged and customers were without water for a while Thursday while the lines were reconnected.
The project is about half finished and is “moving along nicely,” Keaton said.
