A water service line leading into Sips Coffee House on Coshocton Avenue was snagged when construction workers from Park Enterprises were digging a trench for the city’s east end sewer project Tuesday afternoon. Officials from the city of Mount Vernon and the Ohio Department of Transportation were alerted to the break. A 24-hour boil advisory was issued for residents and businesses on Vernedale Drive between Marita Drive and Coshocton Avenue. Employees of the city water department arrived to flush out and repair the water line. No major problems were reported, and the line was repaired very quickly, according to Safety-Service Director Dave Glass. (Photo by Alan Reed)
Sixth-graders at Mount Vernon Middle School received some hands-on learning about llamas and alpacas on Tuesday. Don McFarland, owner of McFarland’s Llama Farm, brought four llamas and two alpacas to the school where students were taught how to lead them, how to treat them and how to take care of them. The llamas and alpacas were very tame and gentle, yet caution was still warned as the animals are known to spit if they get upset. In-class lessons also took place where they were taught all about fibers made from the wool and how to spin yarn from the wool. Pictured is Brittany Shaw feeding Nicker right out of her hand.
