SPARTA — One hundred and 21 seniors made their final trip through the halls of Highland High School as students Sunday. The students became graduates following an hourlong ceremony at the new school.
Superintendent William Dodds recognized the top academic students and then challenged the new graduates as they take the next steps in their lives.
“I challenge these students to work extra hard as they leave Highland High School,” Dodds said. “Don’t just walk away from these halls, work hard and do great things.
“Members of the class of 2012, I’ve enjoyed watching you grow into the people you are today.”
The top students who attended Tri Rivers Career Center were recognized by Bill Karcher, while Joel Liles recognized those who have taken college level classes at Marion Technical College while still in high school.
Melani LaValley and Laura Margraff reminded the students how far they had come during their 12 years at Highland schools.
“We believe in carpe diem because throughout our entire lives, we must always remember to seize the day,” said Margraff.
Jessica Stewart recognized those students in the class of 2012 who did not give up and overcame many obstacles in doing great things while at Highland. She pointed out the members of the softball team that advanced to the regional finals as sophomores, as well as Alisha Presley, who did volunteer work in Haiti.
