MOUNT VERNON — There’s now a safe, convenient way to dispose of old, unwanted medication instead of waiting for the next prescription roundup.
Thanks to the efforts of the Knox Substance Abuse Action Team (KSAAT), two permanent drug drop-off boxes have been purchased and are available to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All drug drop offs are done anonymously. No identification is needed.
The drug drop-off boxes are located in the lobbies of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, 11540 Upper Gilchrist Road, and the Mount Vernon Police Department, 5 N. Gay St.
The drug drop-off boxes are for unused or expired medications, prescriptions and non-prescription pills, creams, pain medications, mood altering drugs, pain relievers, cold and flu remedies, vitamins and pet medications.
Liquids, injectables or inhalers should not be put in the drug drop-off boxes.
Residents are asked to empty medications from bottles or other packaging such as blister packs, into a plastic bag for easy disposal. If medications are left in the bottles, any identifying label should be removed.
Funding to purchase the drug drop-off boxes was provided by several KSAAT members including the Mount Vernon Police Department, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Mental Health & Recovery for Knox and Licking Counties, Fosters Eastside Pharmacy, Alcohol & Drug FREEDOM Center and the Knox County Health Department.
