MOUNT VERNON — The future paths of the members of Mount Vernon High School’s Class of 2012 are as varied as the personalities who accepted their diplomas during Sunday afternoon’s commencement ceremony. Some will be physical therapists, athletic trainers, morticians, laborers, members of the armed services, and even directors. Whatever their future ambitions, the graduates were told to harness their individuality and use it to be the director of their own lives.
“Directors create magic,” said Steven Meeker Jr. “Today, you are truly on your own and you are the director.” Meeker told his fellow classmates to treat their lives as if it is a dramatic production. He encouraged them to “create magic in your life” and to learn who are the real characters in their lives and what to do with those players who cannot act.
“You can deal with those people in one of two ways,” he said. “You can cut them off or use them as motivation.”
As the story of their lives unfold, Meeker said the graduates must seize every opportunity and take control of their destiny.
