MOUNT VERNON — Administrators at Mount Vernon Nazarene University have released a rendering of the Buchwald Center Plaza which will soon become a reality in downtown Mount Vernon. A $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County will help kick-start the construction of the project.
Director of Facilities Services Denny Taylor told the News that construction should begin in the next two to three weeks on the Buchwald Center Plaza which is situated on the north end of the Buchwald Center at the southwest intersection of South Main and West Gambier streets. The plaza will provide outdoor gathering space and greenery for the community. The west portion of the lot will be for parking and include about 10 parking spaces, including handicap spots, according to Taylor. A fence will run along the north end of the plaza. A hedge row may be installed along the south end next to the Buchwald Center.
The green space at the east end will include picnic tables, benches and a portico which will provide the opportunity for outdoor entertainment. All details at this time are tentative, and Taylor hopes construction can be complete by early September in time for the First Friday event which is being sponsored jointly by MVNU, Kenyon College and Central Ohio Technical College.
