MOUNT VERNON — Joy Harris, executive director of Interchurch, found an undesirable donation at the Mount Vernon location on Monday morning.

The donation included items that Interchurch does not accept, such as televisions. The donation even included a sizable bag of garbage.

There was very little from the “donated” items that Interchurch will be able to salvage, Harris said, as she explained staff would be required to spend a lot of time searching through the items to determine what could be sold in the store and what was trash.

Donations such as this cost Interchurch more than just employee time, Harris said, but Interchurch will also need to call its trash company and pay for an extra trash pickup, which takes money away from the organization’s charitable programs.

Harris encourages residents to drop donations off during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special exceptions can be made for large donations from estate sales. Interchurch accepts clothing and housewares, but not furniture, televisions or computers.

Harris recommends Hope Now for furniture and television donations.
