MOUNT VERNON — Although located behind Faith Lutheran Church, 170 Mansfield Ave., the New Testament Stone Garden is a community garden featuring displays illustrating Biblical passages referring to stone. Hundreds of individuals visit the garden each year, coming from all around Ohio, neighboring states and from as far away as Alaska. It is a place for quiet reflection and spiritual renewal 24/7.
The garden itself is in the process of being renewed by caretakers Dorothy and Walter Gunther and a host of volunteers.
For example, the House of the Wedding, a replica of an archeological ruin, has been rebuilt to repair damage and reinforced to discourage further vandalism to the structure.
The flora of the garden have also been attended to. Dead or dying pine trees are being replaced by bald cypress trees, flowering trees and shrubs have been added to the design as have perennials such as hostas and tiger lilies, and a number of memorial trees grace the grounds.
