DANVILLE — The Danville-Howard Turkey Festival kicked off Thursday with clear skies, moderate temperatures and the always popular Little Miss/Little Mister Turkey Contest.

Twenty youngsters vied for the title as Jim and Sherrie Holmes served as masters-of-ceremonies for the event. Jim Holmes held the poster each contestant drew to illustrate his or her favorite event at the Turkey Festival, a turkey or any favorite activity. Sherrie Holmes asked each girl and boy to describe their creation, and then asked turkey-related questions such as, “How many wings [or feathers] does a turkey have?” and “If you had a pet turkey, would you let him sleep with you?” and “Can you make a noise like a turkey?” The question which stumped all the competitors was, “Do turkeys have ears?”

The children’s responses to “What would you name a pet turkey?” were definite crowd pleasers, from Shelby Colopy’s “Crazy” to Nathaniel Stephens’ “Tom” to Josie Kidwell’s “Hot Wings.”
