MOUNT VERNON — Restoration of residential electric service in Knox County is nearing completion by American Electric Power and The Energy Cooperative following the strong windstorm on June 29.

Carmen Prati-Miller, spokeswoman for AEP, told the News this morning that outages in the Newark district have been reduced to 4,900 customers, including about 100 in the Mount Vernon/Knox County area. Total outages for AEP Ohio are now down to about 10,000. Total restoration is expected sometime this evening for those who are still without electric service.

The final customers of The Energy Co-op who experienced a power outage from the windstorm were restored around 6 p.m. Friday. Vice President/COO electric operations Bruce Sumner reported that the final four customers restored were one in Mount Vernon, one in Highwater and two in Flint Ridge. A few customers suffered an outage on Saturday, but Sumner said these were because of a transformer problem with the extreme heat and not from the windstorm.

Scattered outages were also reported by AEP on Friday and Saturday. Prati-Miller said that while crews are working to restore service in specific areas, power in other areas were briefly interrupted while service is reconnected.

Instances have also occurred where homeowners experienced damage to the exterior of their home, resulting in needed repairs to the power drop at the residence. Prati-Miller said that in these cases, the homeowner bears the responsibility of having the wires repaired, which should be performed by a certified electrician. AEP will repair all downed and damaged power lines, but service drops coming out of residential homes are the responsibility of the homeowner.

Until those repairs are made, AEP will not reconnect power to the residence.
