MOUNT VERNON — Last week’s rain was a huge help for Knox County crops, but we could use some more.
Knox County Extension Director John Barker said corn is at a critical stage right now: Tasselling.
“One hundred degree heat and no rain is not a good recipe,” he said. “Corn likes hot, humid weather, but it needs rain to keep going and I don’t see any rain in the forecast for the next week.”
The soybean crop could also use some rain.
“It doesn’t look as good as the corn, but it’s nothing cooler weather and some rainfall wouldn’t fix,” Barker said.
David Mitchem, who farms between Centerburg and Utica, said the rain was a “huge help” but we need to continue to get some rain.
The problem, he said, is that rainfall has been so spotty in the area.
“You can drive two miles and find a 3-inch difference in rainfall so far this year,” he said.
That’s how much difference he’s had in rainfall between where he lives in Knox County and another farm he has in Licking County.
