MOUNT VERNON — 4-H members with a passion for sewing and style, brought their projects to the Mount Vernon High School to be judged Thursday. The projects presented included full dresses, pajamas, business wear and accessories such as purses and jewelry.
Taylor Reihele, 12, Danville, of the Jelloway Valley 4-H Club, constructed a large, hot pink and zebra striped bag. “I am interested in sewing and wanted to venture into accessories to improve my look. I’m very happy with the project,” Reihele explained after her judging. “I will sew dresses too, or anything really. I pick by what my style is.”
Twin sisters Lauren and Leslie Moore, 15, Mount Vernon, of Town and Country 4-H Club, each created an Asian-style inspired dress. “It seemed to fit my personality. I wanted to sew a dress for special events,” stated Lauren. This marked Lauren’s first year presenting a sewing project and she plans to continue making her own garments. “I would like to sew a homecoming dress,” she added.
Leslie, who completed a sewing project for the second year, noted she helped Lauren prepare for the judging process. “It was fun, she looked up to me. I usually look up to her, she is still my big sister even though we are only one minute apart,” Leslie said. Leslie also explained that her red dress was inspired by the Japanese dresses in The King and I; “I really like the Japanese dresses in the play, but I gave mine a modern style.” Both sisters were very pleased with their end results.
The 4-H clothing style show was held at 7 p.m. in the Mount Vernon High School auditorium.
