MOUNT VERNON — The early voting window for the Aug. 7 special election is now open for Knox County residents living in the North Fork and Clear Fork school districts and will close Aug. 3.
North Fork is asking residents in Clay-Martinsburg, Miller and Morgan townships to renew a 1 percent earned income tax. The revenue generated by the tax — which does not apply to social security benefits, disability and survivor benefits, welfare benefits, child support or workers’ compensation benefits — is used for the daily operating expenses of the district such as utility bills and staff salaries. People who work in the district but reside elsewhere are not subject to the tax.
If approved by the voters, the earned income tax will go into effect Jan. 1, 2014, for a continuing period of time.
