MOUNT VERNON — An important exhibit at the Knox County Agricultural Museum honors the hundreds of Knox County residents who served in the armed forces during World War II. The honor roll, previously located in the museum library, now has a prominent spot just inside the museum’s fairway entrance.
Museum coordinator Paul Hothem said the list of names came from a book owned by Charles and Estalee Strawser. Called “General Marshall’s Victory Report on the Winning of World War II in Europe and the Pacific,” the publication included an area-specific additional section featuring “the contributions of our community toward the winning of the war.”
The comprehensive list includes those who served in the war and names 124 individuals who were combat casualties and eight people who died from non-combat causes, such as from illness or as a result of an accident.
WWII veteran Roger Groseclose, 91, said he appreciates the display.
“I think it’s nice because they are honoring everybody,” he said. “There aren’t too many of us left any more.”
Howard Kidwell, also a WW II veteran, agreed. “I think it’s real nice,” he said. “It’s important that young people today know about it. I have grandchildren that I know will come in here and see it.”
There is another unique exhibit related to World War II. The museum has a wagon chassis created by Doc Fix-It, who had to scrounge for scrap and recycled metal because of civilian material shortages due to the war. The museum’s piece is thought to be the sole extant example of Doc Fix-It’s work.
